Lighthouses at Risk Lighthouses Lost Forever

To have an "at risk" lighthouse listed here, please send details to

There are hundreds of lighthouses in Canada that are at risk of being demolished. When the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act (HLPA) came into force in May 2010, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) promptly declared more than 400 active lighthouses to be surplus. This was done in order to absolve DFO of any responsibility to protect the heritage value of these lighthouses under the HLPA. All of these lighthouses have heritage value and meet the Federal Government's own criteria for Heritage Lighthouse designation.

These lighthouses can now be designated as Heritage Lighthouses ONLY if an individual or group agrees to take ownership of them and to conserve them. If nobody steps forward to conserve these lighthouses, most of them will be neglected until they are demolished.
